It was a thrilling experience for a whole host of reasons. One of them continues to resonate with me days later. It has to do with language (one of my favorite subjects).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of my jobs was to write the welcoming words of their wedding ceremony &#8212; to share the story of their relationship and give guests a context for the union they were there to witness. I dedicated hours to writing a ceremony that captured the essence of their lighthearted and playful relationship and the seriousness of the occasion. I agonized over my keyboard, scrutinizing every word and phrase. Eventually, I took a moment to reflect on the power of language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What struck me mightily was an aspect of linguistics I studied in graduate school \u2013 speech act theory \u2013 the notion that words perform actions. By simply SAYING something, we DO something. Saying the words \u201cI do\u201d performs an action that can\u2019t be performed any other way (in my culture, anyway). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You know what? &nbsp;Wedding ceremonies are FILLED with speech acts. \u201cI, Andrea, take you, Chris, to be my husband.\u201d &nbsp;\u201cWith this ring, I marry you.\u201d So much gets done with language in just 15 minutes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ultimate speech act in a wedding ceremony is \u201cI now pronounce you husband and wife.\u201d Saying it gave me goose bumps. With that one sentence, I sealed the deal and made their covenant official and binding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a language person, it doesn\u2019t get cooler than that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"This past weekend, I had the honor of officiating the wedding of two of my dearest friends, Chris and Andrea.
